Pragmatic trials also have advantages, including the ability to draw on existing data sources and a higher probability of detecting meaningful differences from traditional trials. However, pragmatic tests may have some limitations that limit their reliability and generalizability. Participation rates in some trials could be lower than anticipated due to the health-promoting effect, financial incentives or competition from other research studies. Many pragmatic trials are also restricted by the need to recruit participants in a timely manner. The authors of the Pragmatic Free Trial Meta identified 48 RCTs that self-labeled themselves as pragmatic and that were published from 2022.
