How to Replace an audi spare key cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.
The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially if you're looking at an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is a good option.
5. Tachometer
A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car.
