Upgrades to gear increase its stats base and often enhances its extras. The value of these upgrade is determined by the tiers of gear, their requirements, and the number of random augmentations can be applied.

The game will put an item in your inventory after you've met the requirements for an upgrade. The progress bar will then update to show you how close to getting the upgrade completed. You can also verify the status of an upgrade by going to any NPC that upgrades items.
