Upgrade components

An upgrade for an item in Guild Wars 2 is a process that can increase the effectiveness of your armor and weapons. This can be achieved through various methods, including using upgrade components as well as upgrading an item's mark levels or rarity. Additionally, many items can be reforged, which could boost their stats even more.

Upgradeable items can be found throughout the game, both around the world and as rewards for missions. They can also be crafted by players. The main way to upgrade equipment is by making use of upgrade components, which are the items that can be slotted into equipment. Most equipment has upgrade slots, and the majority require a certain upgrade level. Some upgrade components give specific bonuses while others give a general bonus.

There are a variety of upgrade components in the game, such as universal upgrades, inscriptions and jewels. Universal upgrades, such as gemstones and enchantments, can be placed in any equipment type and provide smaller bonuses than those that are equipment type specific to the type of equipment. Glyphs are only available in gathering tools and provide a variety of bonuses, from increasing the speed of an item's gathering to providing additional crafting materials.

To upgrade an item, select it in your inventory and open the Upgrade window. The window will show an overview on the right side of the screen showing the expected stats after the upgrade, and any materials or components required. If you don't possess enough of either, the Upgrade button will show as Blocked.

The upper-right corner shows the number of upgrade components required for an item. The cost of an upgrade increases with the upgrade level and rarity, however it can be reduced by many different methods, such as buying upgrades at a merchant or trading them with other players.

Most weapons can be upgraded using a prefix upgrade, such as an insignia or a rune, and a lot of them are upgraded by suffix upgrades. These upgrades change the name of the item, adding an adjective, for example "Radiant" or "Minor Vigor.' The exceptions are the noninscribable wands, shields and foci from the Prophecies and Factions campaigns, which are not upgradeable with any mods at all.

Glyphs

Glyphs are a way to convey information via visuals. They are animated to grab the viewer's eye and spark curiosity. The glyphs' animation mimics the body language, making them more effective in transmitting a linguistic barrier-crossing message. Glyphs also improve the likelihood of remembering messages by creating a familiarity in the brain.

Each glyph can increase the value of a stat by a specific amount. This is shown on the item upgrades when you open it in the Glyph Storage. This is the maximum value that the glyph can enhance a stat by and not the amount it will actually increase it by. The value of the glyph depends on the tier and quality of the item that you are admiring.

The majority of upgrade components added to items cannot be removed or replaced without removing them, with the exception of legendary upgrades and equipment. However, if you have a rune or glyph that hasn't yet been applied to your equipment, you can transfer it to a different piece equipment by utilizing the Upgrade Glyphs context menu in the Glyphs panel. This will create an Glyph Set that includes the chosen glyph.

If you are looking to remove the glyph from an item then you'll need to salvage it with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. This will cause the item to be destroyed in which it is installed, but you can recover the upgraded item using the glyph and its shards, so this should not be considered a loss.

The addition of a glyph to an item can cause it to become unstable, and the shards of the glyph will disappear from your inventory once you dismantle the item. You can also place an inscription to your equipment to give it a bonus. For instance the glyph Deferred Damage can store damage for the wearer and then deal it out slowly rather than all at once. This can be helpful for players who take a lot of damage from enemies however do not want to be overwhelmed.

Reroll tokens

Reroll tokens can be used to change the affixes of equipment and weapons. They can be obtained from many sources, such as mysterious boxes, rare drops from skulled monsters or by killing bosses. Each reroll provides the player with an affix randomly chosen and usually better than what they had before. Reroll tokens are also a good way to reroll weapon stats that can be upgraded for better damage or additional perks.

Items that have been rerolled do not appear in the item upgrade menu, however, they are still eligible to receive upgrades. By pressing the "upgrade button", you can recycle these rerolled items. This will change the appearance of the window for the item and let up to six items to be selected to recycle. Recycling an item can add a small amount of points to its level gauge. The amount is determined by the rarity of the item and its level, which means higher-level items are more valuable to recycle than lower-level ones.

Players can also make use of Reroll Tokens and Star Remnants to reroll weapons to upgrade units. Rerolls will roll a % chance for a weapon's trait. If it is higher, the weapon is upgraded. If it is lower the weapon is left as it was. Weapons can be upgraded up to three times.

Rerolls are a great option for upgrading an item, but users should be aware that it can lower the overall ilvl of the weapon based on the number of rerolls required in order to increase it to the final level. This effect of lowering is most effective on ring items and Diadems that do not have any other options for raising ilvls.

Players have complained that the reroll system is expensive. It's more fair to allow people to pay for it with cash or food items that will allow them to make changes to their builds without having to invest too much time. However paying for rerolls is not something the developers want to implement at this point in the game's development. Instead, they plan to add a race change potion in the future.
