WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random additional substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variation (like Eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for the latter due to the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item level upgrade; additional hints, is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item however they'll always be cheaper than buying new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. Players can purchase them from NPCs of item upgraders in a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon or armor. button, which displays an image of the item upgrader mod at the next upgrade level when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Item upgraders can be found in many places on the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The upgrade discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades must be acquired through a variety of means that are both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, many new features have been added to the upgrade system. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a certain level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading other items to that same item level will cost less, even when they are part of another set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain achievement milestones.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a few choices. Flightstones are an item that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more special, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests are only able to be used on gear of a specific rank, and each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and simplest upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complicated requires as many as 20 crests, based on the type of gear being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by completing content of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, however it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. When a piece reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This is to allow players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests have one usage and it's crucial to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrader gear you have available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially relevant for trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character that will be able to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
