9:03 p.m. ET: Up now is the ageless wonder, Nonito Donaire (42-7, 28 KOs), as he looks to claim the vacant WBC bantamweight championship against Alexandro Santiago (27-3-5, 14 KOs). Should the 40-year-old Donaire pull this off, he would break his own record as the oldest bantamweight champion in boxing history.

Bud started upping the feints, forcing Willie to swing wide and hard. Bud kept his jab on a string, backing Willie into the blue corner. The punchers grew heavier by the combination. At one point, while Bud was working Willie in the second round, a few kids who were watching the brawl underneath the ropes were thrown backward. Willie could barely protect himself: jabs were coming from every direction, from the hip, splitting the guard and denting the shell. The precision of the punches were so accurate, they would’ve made quarterbacks gush. Any time Willie moved his guard or fixed his headgear or the second after he blinked, he could practically smell the leather before it touched his nose.

Crawford is a veteran in the sport and in the 147-pound division. Until now, he’s fairly proven his mettle by battling some of the best fighters on the roster. But in order to walk the legendary pathway, he’ll have to dig more.

In March 2013, Crawford scored his biggest victory to date, a 10-round unanimous decision over Breidis Prescott. He followed that up with a sixth-round TKO of Alejandro Sanabria in June. Then that October, won a 10-round unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Alex Klimov.

Crawford even targeted an undisputed crown in a second division, a first for a male fighter in the sport’s history. He seized his first at junior welterweight in 2017, which prompted the move up and led to a career stall that wasn’t his fault at all. He could land any punch a boxer can throw, from both stances, but not the opponents he most wanted to bludgeon. Like Spence.

Crawford comes out looking like he wants to mix it up more here as he lands a right hand. Both fighters trade at center ring and make grazing contact. Left lands for Porter upstairs. Hard body shot lands for Crawford to the body, then a right hand over the top. Left hand lands for Crawford in between two shots for Porter. Check hook from Crawford just misses. Right hand lead lands for Porter as Crawford bounces into the ropes. Double jab comes from Porter this time. Jab lands for Porter again. Check hook lands for Crawford sending Porter into the corner. Crawford partially lands a shot just before the bell.

His relatives climbed inside the ring, mom clad in a gold jumpsuit, jumping all over the place. The ring all but sagged from the number of bodies crammed inside. It seemed like all of Omaha managed to talk their way in.

This is a familiar path for Crawford. After going undisputed at junior welterweight in 2017, he moved to welterweight and won the WBO championship in his first fight at 147 pounds with a TKO win over Jeff Horn. Crawford defended that title six times while fans called for a fight with Spence, who put together the WBC, WBA and IBF titles, but was a part of Premier Boxing Champions, while Crawford was in the Top Rank stable for most of that time.

Canelo Alvarez has flip-flopped somewhat on whether he would be willing to take a superfight against Crawford. Initially, Alvarez was a firm "no" on the possibility of facing Crawford, citing criticism of him facing smaller men in the past as a primary reason for refusing. Alvarez's stance has softened somewhat since, suggesting that he would be willing "if the money is right."

Round 8: Madrimov’s trainer is begging for combinations. Crawford triples up on his jab. Madrimov feints and feints and feints. He is not respecting his corner’s wishes. Crawford fires off another jab. More boos. This is officially a bad fight so far. Madrimov connects with a pair of right hands and that draws a reaction from Crawford. Nice exchange in the center of the ring. Crawford tries to sneak in a shovel hook right hand. Madrimov smacks Crawford with a slick overhand right. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Madrimov. (76-76 Madrimov.)

It doesn’t seem that long ago that the California-based lefty lost a unanimous decision to Rashidi Ellis (October 2020), and Rocha has done nothing since to suggest that he could live with the pound-for-pound king.

But that doesn’t mean Crawford, 36, can’t still angle for Canelo in the near future, and that may be what’s on his mind with a move to 160 to face Eubank (33-3, 24 KO). In short, if terry crawford can go to middleweight and beat Eubank, and look good doing so, Canelo may then see him as a viable in-ring option at 168, and it could also make more fans see Crawford as a credible opponent for Alvarez, which makes it even more financially viable.

Crawford was a gold medalist in both the 2006 National Pal Championships in Oxnard, California and the 2006 Blue & Gold National Championships in Carson, California. Crawford earned a silver medal in the 2006 U.S. National Golden Gloves Championships in Omaha, and a bronze in the 2006 U.S. National Championships in Colorado Springs.
